Job description

Institute of Cancer Research – Director of Corporate Governance

The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) is one of the world’s most influential cancer research institutes with an outstanding record of achievement dating back over 100 years. Led by their CEO Professor Paul Workman (an expert in cancer drug discovery), and together with their hospital partner the Royal Marsden, the ICR is rated in the top four centres for cancer research and treatment worldwide.

This world class cancer research institute, based in Chelsea, is seeking an individual to join them as Director Of Corporate Governance. This is a senior leadership role within the Chief Operating Officer’s Office, which will involve working closely with the COO, CEO and the Board of Trustees. As Director of Corporate Governance you will be responsible for the effectiveness of the ICR’s governing body and committees in line with statutory and regulatory requirements, as such playing a key role in the senior leadership of the institute.

The role itself will be broad across company secretary and governance, stretching from providing authoritative and wise counsel to the executives on all governance and regulatory matters through to minuting board and committee meetings and Companies House filings.

The successful candidate will be an experienced Company Secretary or Governance professional who has ideally gained some experience during the course of their career to date in either the Charitable or Higher Education sectors. Those in a senior role at a large corporate; for example, in the pharmaceutical or professional services industries, looking to head up their own function would also be welcome applicants.

As a Director in the organisation you must have the gravitas to liaise with and advise the executives and trustees; additionally, in a role that covers the governance and company secretary function from top to bottom, you must be willing and enthusiastic in rolling your sleeves up, although you will have the support of a junior governance professional.

This is an excellent senior leadership opportunity for an individual who truly believes in the ICR’s mission of finding a cure for cancer.
